A Century of Scouting: |
|
In
1907, Robert Baden-Powell brought together 22 boys, some
from public schools, some from working class homes and held
an experimental camp on
Brownsea Island, UK, to try out his ideas of
mixing together boys from diverse backgrounds and teaching
them to survive in the wild and learn how to live by a code
of honor. The results of that camp sparked the idea and
realization of the Boy Scouts. 2010 will mark the 100th
year for the Boy Scouts of America.

Bio:
Robert Lord Baden-Powell was born on February 22, 1857.
His career in the 13th Hussars took him to India,
Afghanistan, Malta and Africa. It was in Africa where he won
his fame as he successfully fought off a 217 day siege of
Mafeking. During the siege, his book, Aids to Scouting, was
published. |
When he returned to England he found that his book was being
used by people in all walks of life, particularly youth. He
held a trial camp on Brownsea Island in 1907 and Scouting
was born. In 1908, his revised book, intended for a more
youthful audience, Scouting for Boys was published. On
January 8, 1941, Baden-Powell, "Chief Scout of the World"
died at 83.
